Falls Lake is a US Army Corps of Engineers man-made lake that covers 12,410 acres with approximately 175 miles of shoreline and an average pool of 251.5 feet above mean sea level.  The lake was named after a rocky section of whitewater falls on the Neuse River separating the Piedmont from the Coastal Plain.  The Falls of the Neuse rocks are now submerged by this recreational lake that takes primary inflows from the Eno River, Flat River, and Little River, and exits as the Neuse River.  Falls Lake provides drinking water for several of the surrounding communities, including the City of Raleigh.  Like the other US Army Corps of Engineers projects, the lake also serves for flood control to keep our areas safe during Hurricanes and other seasonal water events.  Completed in 1981, and embayed by the 1,915 foot Falls Dam, an earthen structure having a top elevation of 291.5 feet above Mean Sea Level (MSL) and a maximum depth of 92.5 feet above the stream bed, Falls Lake is a popular spot for fishing, boating, swimming, and other water sports.  The adjacent Falls Lake State Recreational Area is a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, and for launching Kayak's and Canoe's.  For beginning paddlers, the adjacent Beaver Dam Lake is restricted to motor boats, so it is safer water for a beginning paddler or during popular Holidays like Memorial Day or Fourth of July.  The main lake is accessible by water from Beaver Dam Lake.
